The Chalet

Racatau

ROMANIA

                                                               Transylvania

It takes you about two and a half days by car to get into the walking area. Be attentive to the harvesters and horses on the highways in Romania and the - sometimes - big holes in the road. Don’t drive at night! And keep your speed. The police loves your money!

In the area we were going to (in 2000) we had , at home, the impression that finding current maps and possibilities to sleep and eat on the route should have given too many problems. So, we stayed at a “chalet” in the middle of an almost undiscovered walking area: Transylvanian hill and mountains scenery, caves and special flora and fauna.

Easter 2000: many day-walks out of a chalet in the village of Racatau, about 45 kilometers south west from Cluj.

The chalet was situated on an island in a river, surrounded by green summits of the Transylvanian hills and mountains. It is one of the most idyllic places we ever saw. In the morning horse and cow went out for their daily dinner in the hills, in the evening they came back…….on their own.

The local guide Nelou guided us along the finest spots and brought us in contact with the local residents. Such as those living on the uplands of Marisel.

2007: the chalet is still there, but closed. The guide is working in another country - as many Romanians - . The road to Racatau is even  worse than in 2000. But: still it is an area of formidable beauty!

Alternative: between Huedin and Gilau, the northern border of the area, you can find more and more places to sleep and eat. From here great day-walks can be made. In Cluj they offer nowadays suitable walking maps.

Softride is a private tourist organization. They can help you in planning and organizing your trip to and stay in Romania. Whatever you want. Visit their website.
